What This Site Does

Los Angeles Museums Guide is an independent directory of thirty museums across Los Angeles County, from the Getty Center in Brentwood to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Every page answers the same four questions in the same order: what does it cost, when is it open, what day is it closed, and is it free. The answers come from the museums' own websites and the live ticket listings, not from memory or from other guides.

The site has no byline. It speaks as an editorial voice, and every claim on it is checked against a published source before it is written.

How Every Listing Is Checked

Each museum's price, opening hours, closed day and free status is verified against the museum's own website and the live ticket listing at the time of writing. Where the two disagree, the museum's own site wins. Where a figure could not be confirmed, the page says so rather than guessing.

Ratings and review counts shown on this site are the ticket platform's own figures at the time of checking. Where a listing publishes no usable number, the site writes "on the listing" rather than inventing one. Some products have a review base too thin for a number to mean anything, and those carry no stars at all. The product is still real and bookable; the number simply is not shown, because a rating built on a handful of reviews would mislead more than it informs.

What Is Free, Said Plainly

Eleven of the thirty museums listed here are free, and the site says so plainly instead of selling them. The Getty Center, the Getty Villa, The Broad, MOCA Grand Avenue, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the California Science Center, the California African American Museum, Griffith Observatory, the Hammer Museum, the Fowler Museum at UCLA and the Wende Museum all offer free general admission.

The honest note is what is not free. The Getty museums charge for parking. The Broad releases free timed tickets monthly and they go fast, and special exhibitions can be ticketed separately. The California Science Center charges for IMAX and special exhibitions. Griffith Observatory charges for planetarium shows. Free admission does not always mean a free visit, and every free listing names the catch beside it.

The site never writes that Los Angeles museums are free as a blanket claim, because it is not true. LACMA, for example, is not free: it is $25 for LA County residents and $30 for everyone else, with free weekday entry after 3pm for LA County residents with ID only.

Why Parking Gets Its Own Attention

In Los Angeles, parking is often the real cost of a free museum. The Getty Center and the Getty Villa charge $25 per car, dropping to $15 after 3pm. The Hammer Museum's on-site parking runs roughly $8 to $9 for the first hours with validation and a daily maximum around $22 to $30. The Fowler Museum at UCLA sits on paid campus parking, quoted at about $5 an hour up to a $17 daily maximum. These single-source figures are hedged, not stated flat, and where a museum's parking price is not verified, the page says parking is paid and points to the museum's own site rather than guessing.

What Is Closed Right Now

Several Los Angeles museums are currently closed, and this site does not list them as options. The Japanese American National Museum is closed until 23 January 2027. Holocaust Museum LA is closed for construction with no reopening date. The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is temporarily closed, though MOCA Grand Avenue remains open and free. The Annenberg Space for Photography closed permanently in 2020, and The Bunny Museum was destroyed in the January 2025 Eaton Fire.

Two partial closures matter just as much. The La Brea Tar Pits museum building is closed for renovation; Hancock Park, the Lake Pit and the outdoor excavator tour are what is open. Space Shuttle Endeavour is off display until the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center opens on 13 November 2026, so no page on this site describes seeing it now.
